WOW! a little more then a month out of college and I'm sort of missing it. There are some pretty cool stuff going on in my life, including new job, and new art projects. But for now I'll let you guys see what I showed for my commencement show. As you guys might remember there were a couple patterns that I made inspired by The GAGA!! check this out on bathing suits!
There is a third screen print that completes the series for now, but have not document it yet.

SO! I finished the second Latin Music Icon last week and just got to scan it in a few days ago. Here is the result. Her name is Rocio Durcal and is one of my favorite performers of the 21st century. She was very dramatic and flamboyant in the way she dressed and acted, but with a hint of chic.
All this of course is secondary to her unmatched voice.

So I changed my thesis. I know is late in the game, but I haven't made things that make me as happy as the new direction I've taken. The new body of work will feature Latin American music Icons such as the great Celia Cruz, Rocio Durcal, Tito Fuentes, and maybe Thalia or Selena. I'm also going to do some North American music Icons like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Celine Dion, Dolly Parton. These are some of the one's I've been considering and will pick and choose which I end up doing. Here is the first of the Latin American Icons. The great Celia Cruz. AZUCAR!!!

Alright I've come up with a couple different color pairings for the gaga pattern I've been working on. Here are my two favorite ones. Let me know which one you think would be better for a blue bathing suit. uhm... the bikini part of a two piece bathing suit lol. you'll see later.

SO. I've been working on a lady gaga venture for my independent study this semester. I've started with the "Shockqueen" piece, but I've moved on to fabric pattern designed after images found in her videos, and or things that make me think of her.
Here is a sketch for a pattern I'm going to re-print on fabric. I'm working on color studies now.

First post in 11 months and last post of the year! way to go me!
new years resolution: update this blog at least once a month.
(but I did make new improvements. let me know what you think of that)

ok ok. so as the year ends I'd like to wish everyone a healthy and prosperous new year.

Here are some stuff i did in 2009.

This piece i did in Italy around march 09. It is an 8 color screen print, this is one of eight that I have I did a few more but I was really content with this piece. I'm trying to see if this is possible through photoshop... we'll see.

For my Studio Remix Design/Web class I created a poster for my fake exhibit. The goal was to create a composition which broke away from the grid. Using one of my ink illustrations for the background.
This Fall semester I took Typography one and it was a lot of fun. Here is an example of second to last piece i did for that class, where we were to create a weather poster that was either informational or illustrative... needless to say I failed to achieve either extreme. But I learned to appreciate the balance in this poster. (the poster had to include the date, for which its Nov. 6. I didn't come up with this format till after two weeks of sketches)

So I have been going out and exploring A LOT! and I have come across many forms of graffiti but this one stood out the most. It is very elaborate and not very legible but I might be working from it.

I'm interested in patterns and hopefully incorporate colors that I observe around the city and include it in my work. Find my niche color pallet maybe?!? Any who... everywhere I turn I see beautiful decorative patters that i want to work with/copy.

Some of my work here will include paintings or drawings (however you want to interpret these) which will be very loose in nature, but layer detail over it. Using tracing paper over these type of drawings or paint right on top... idk yet, I'll experiment lots.
I'm hoping to do many little drawings like these and expose them as a big piece, then take the ones I enjoy the most and enlarge them to decorate with patters and color.

Finally, in my Serigraphy class we are doing a couple of screen prints on paper and one on fabric. The first will be on paper and will have two colors, but the illustration must deal with our feeling or our dealing with the city of Florence. I'm taking a more humoristic approach where i wanna have myself in some funny hat, showing off the Duomo with some crazy pattern in the background. Colors are still up for grab. I'm thinking it over right now. I still need to decide how the colors will layer and mix... updates to come. (sorry for the picture being on it's side)

Clock 1: painting additively on to the paper, and then cutting it up to be placed on the sanded background.

Clock 2: Acrylics layered and then sanded after the layers dried.

Clock 3: Acrylic layered colors, and sanded while wet.

Clock 4: Ink layered many many times on top of dry wall grid tape to create the texture, then sanding down some, and finally details with more ink.

Clock 5: Made with gouache then drained in running water to create the burned look.

Clock 6: This one was more fun because I got to play around with ink and mess up then rebuild it as a collage, which gave me a nice texture. This is quite out of ordinary for my kind of work, but I enjoyed it and might explore it more in the future. oh! it is ink and gloss/matte mediums.

Clock 7: Made with gouache washes.

Clock 8: I'm pretty happy with this one too, because it pushed me out of my comfort zone. It was done after a Sam Weber visit to our class and a demo with watercolor/rubber cement. It took forever to create the dark colors through layering, but I'm overall pleased.

Ok, so these are clocks made in my Media Kitchen Wet class, and some are not here, cuz they are not documented or just not cool enough.

Oh! yeah, and this was my final.

This was my final for elements (F06). Pastel/Graphite on Illustration board.

This is a piece that started off as a collage and was painstakingly pushed to a mixed media piece on a print of a scan of the collage. (confusing?... well it was) I titled it "Mi Musica" because the object was a set of headphones I carried around my backpack (before my awesome ipod nano) and I drew it endlessly on the original collage, then when it came time for the printed version I found these interesting figures that resembled dancers... well sort of. Hence the title, which translates to "My Music".

Ok, so it's now, what?, summer before my junior year at the Maryland Institute College of Art and I still do not have a website nor blog for my work. Well, I finally decided to push my butt out of bed and get started. To start off, I'm known as Noel but my whole name is Hilcias Noel Hernandez, and because I don't really want to be called by my first name I named this blog HNoelH. This is still kinda weird for me, but there are a lot of Noels out there so I prefer this. Uhm, well I don't know what I should show first. lets see, I could start with High School work, but I won't break your computer screens by showing you that stuff. So i'll just crack your screens a bit, with some freshmen work. keep in mind these are pieces done in foundation year and are not cohesive. (there aren't that many)
